SEASONS OF THE WILD
With a Foreword by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
Chapters Publishing, 1995 (out of print)
"Outside your window, in your own backyard, at your local pond or beach or park, on city streets and sometimes even inside your house, plants and animals are doing something incredibly interesting and wholly unexpected. Houseflies are washing their eyes with their hands and tasting their food with their feet. Wild turkeys are landing on sidewalks beside parked cars. Spiders are weaving intricate designs falsely advertising flowers to nectar-eating insectsthe silken equivalent of a diner's neon "EATS," which, of course, is what the spider then does. These chapters are intended as a guide to some of these ordinary and astonishing events, to suggest new ways to observe and begin to think about the near-at-hand creatures, forces, behaviors and activities that are often overlooked."
from the Introduction to Nature's Everyday Mysteries.
Both these books are collections of Montgomery's essays from Nature Journal, the column she has been writing for science section of The Boston Globe for more than 10 years. Although out of print, both books are still available at some bookstores and libraries. Publishers please note: the rights to these books have reverted to the author, who also owns rights to all columns written after Seasons of the Wild.
